Coats and Zips

This week at school the kids have been zipping their coats together. Small groups of them have been drifting around the playground conjoined and giggling. Look, they say to me. We are zipped together.
‘Oh yes,’ I say. ‘That’s clever.’
Look, look.
‘Yes, I see. That’s clever.’
Look.
‘Yes.’
At the end of playtime, children from different classes struggle to separate themselves and all are late to line up. I pass the Year 1 classroom assistant in the corridor. Small children stream past him. He is red-faced and wrestling with a pair of red tracksuit tops. ‘Fucking muppets,’ he mutters, only half not meaning it.
